For the upcoming school year we will once again begin after the Labor Day Holiday. The children/students are scheduled to return on Tuesday, September 2nd, please plan for an early dismissal on that day to allow for Back to School Night in the evening. The calendar for the 2014-2015 school year is not finalized, but hopefully knowing the beginning date is helpful to those who are formulating plans for the summer.

Thanks to Ximena and Valentina’s mother, our Halloween candy was delivered to Dr. Hurst, and we made $60.00!! It is now time for our “Pay it Forward” vote. We will be joining forces with Heifer International and supply a family who is in need with a special gift! Your voting choices are:

~ A trio of rabbits
~ Three flocks of chicks
~ A tree seedling
~ A gift of honeybees
~ Three flocks of ducks and geese
~ A Hope Basket – containing chicks and rabbits

Ballots will go to the students this week. Thank you to those students who donated a portion of their Halloween candy to our troops!

Some families will be receiving an invitation to assist the team from Catholic Schools Management by composing a one or two page narrative following an outline provided by this group. Other families at the school may be invited to participate in an onsite interview responding to questions or sharing their perspective and experience at the school. These groups will not be the same. On behalf of our Pastor, Father David we would like to extend our gratitude in advance for your time, assistance and response to these invitations.

In being parents we sometimes hear of situations that happen within our child’s’ life at school and perhaps have questions or concerns about the circumstances. Please listen and ask your child about the details surrounding the situation, ask how it was resolved and then if you have questions or concerns please contact the teacher. Teachers are known for the ‘eyes in the back of their head’, but in reality it is impossible to see everything. Teachers are there to assist every child, but can only do so if they are aware of the incident in a timely fashion. They are made aware through personal observation or communication by either the student and/or the parent. Teachers have a desire to assist all students in developing strategies to not only resolve conflicts, but empower them to stand up for what is right. Therefore to assist your child and adhere to the protocol discussed during classroom orientations encourage your child to communicate with the teacher verbally or via a written note and we request that you communicate with your child’s teacher(s) and if necessary the teacher will then communicate with the other parents. Focusing on this strategy will ensure timely assistance, help eliminate misunderstandings, encourage confidence and growth within each student plus provide opportunities for all students to discuss conflict resolution strategies during their classroom community meetings. Remember education is continuous and an essential component to education is social development.

 

PARENT- TEACHER CONFERENCES
Hopefully everyone has now had an opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher(s) to discuss growth and goals for the upcoming year. Please also note that this is an open invitation during the school year not just at specific times on the calendar. Communication and collaboration is essential to the every child’s success so please make every effort to COMMUNICATE. You are welcome to email or leave a message in the office and the teacher will contact you to establish a time to meet.

KI’S SCHOOL LUNCHES is a wonderful hot lunch program that OMMS has used for a few years now. They provide organic and free range meals, made from scratch. Some sauces are vegetable based and they have meals for all diet needs and appetites. Children hand select fruits and vegetables and they can add homemade dressings to all their items. Children are eating everything on their plate and rarely ever toss any food in the trash. It usually costs about $20 a week. It eliminates the morning scramble to fill a lunch box only to hear they tossed most of it away.


In order to keep this fabulous program at OMMS, they need at least 40 orders a day. Otherwise, they will have to discontinue their service here at OMMS. Please log on to Kisschoollunches.com and use code 1956 to review their ever changing menu. I have been purchasing lunches for years now and haven’t been disappointed.

Verbal conferences are scheduled to begin the week of October 28. Although we have specific times set within our calendar for conferences please know that communication is essential and times to meet can be scheduled throughout the school year. This initial conference is verbal, and it provides an opportunity for parents and teachers to further discuss observations after approximately eight weeks of school. It is a time to discuss and establish goals in moving forward throughout the school year. In collaboration, we want to ensure that your child has a positive experience and a successful academic school year. We encourage all parents to check or speak with your child’s teacher to establish a time to meet. This year we have incorporated a full day (Monday, October 28) into our school calendar for parents to meet with their child’s teacher(s).

Consider becoming part of a committee on the PTG….we could always use your help and appreciate the sharing of ideas

Consider lending a hand to keep our playgrounds tidy…. keeping bark evenly distributed under play equipment and sand in sandbox, cleaning play equipment eliminating webs, etc.

Consider sharing a little of your valuable time by listening to our early readers

Consider joining a group of parishioners and parents who continue to gather on the second Saturday of every month to lend a hand to support needs around parish and school. The group known as MOP = Maintain Our Parish which includes the school.

A wonderful opportunity and an additional benefit came from our Scholastic Book Fair Fundraisers and through our combined accumulated points. With these points we were able to obtain three additional Smart Boards; then two other families came forward with the speakers and projectors. Furthermore with the remaining points we were able to order a new portable sound system for OMMS (has not yet arrived). Plus through other parents/contacts we were blessed with another three Smart Boards….WOW. The Smart Boards represent one component of the complete package for an operable system and we are working on completing to have six fully operable systems! Many, many, blessings to begin a new year.

Some questions have been brought to our attention regarding the annual school calendar.  The current Annual Calendar in list format is not on the website www.omms.org, but you can access our current annual calendar through GOOGLE which is on the website.  Please click on CALENDAR tab at the top to see the month by month calendar.  Any changes to the calendar will be noted on the website Google calendar and in our newsletters.  Hopefully this will provide the information that you need.

Parents of Primary through Senior Elementary students:

The Annual School Christmas Concert is on December 6th at 6:30 p.m. Please have your child in their classroom at 6:00 p.m. Christmas Concert attire is red and/or green with dark pants/skirt. The children are looking forward to sharing their gift of song to bring in the Christmas Season. Please feel free to invite family and friends. If you have any questions regarding the concert, please contact Mr. Tom.

The OMMS Choir will hold its first practice on Friday, September 21st. Choir practice will be held every 3rd Friday of each month at 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. Please complete the permission slip and turn it
into the office no later than September 21st. Please have your child bring his/her lunch on all choir days as the children eat lunch at 12:30 p.m. on Choir days. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Tom.
