The following is a note addressed to all parents from Ms. Karen regarding an upcoming focus within the field of Computer Science.
We live in a world surrounded by technology. But only a tiny fraction of us learn the basics of how computers work, or how to create software technology. Fewer students are learning how computers work than a decade ago. Girls and minorities are severely underrepresented. And yet, technology is increasingly shaping almost every aspect of how we live our lives. Computer Science provides a foundation for virtually any career. The basics can be learned by anybody, starting in elementary school.
Because programming literacy will be key to your child’s future, Old Mission Montessori School is joining a massive campaign to prepare students for the 21st century during Computer Science Education Week (Dec 9-15). The goal of the Hour of Code is to prove that regardless of age, race or gender, anyone can learn how to not just consume, but build the technologies of the future. During this week, every child from 1st through 8th grade at Old Mission Montessori School will have the opportunity to participate in an hour long introduction to computer science in the Lower Lab. The program consists of online tutorials featuring Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Angry Birds. Our students will be among the over 2 million already planning to try one Hour of Code worldwide. This movement, organized by Code.org and supported by Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and over 100 others, is a statement that today’s generation of students are ready to learn critical skills for 21st century success.
The skills your children uncover during the Hour of Code won’t stop there! 1st thru 5th grade students will continue in Computer Class in the more than 20 hours of curriculum offered by code.org and through programs such as Crazy Machines, Zoombinis and Scratch programming.
The Hour of Code campaign aims to introduce 10 million students to one hour of computer science. While your children will have the opportunity to participate at school, I invite you to participate too. Go to: http://csedweek.org/learn2
